What to Do If Something Feels Wrong During a Meetup on markto.ch

Trust your instincts — if anything feels off, prioritize your safety and leave immediately. Here’s a clear, step-by-step guide for handling uneasy situations during a handover.

Immediate Actions (Do These Right Away)

  • Stop the transaction — Politely say: “Sorry, I’ve changed my mind” or “I’m not comfortable — I’m going to leave now.”
Keep it short, calm, and firm. Do not explain or argue.
  • Do not hand over money or take the item — Even if you already paid cash or sent TWINT, do not accept the item if the situation feels unsafe. Walk away without it if necessary.
  • Leave the area quickly — Head toward people, a shop entrance, your car, or public transport. Do not go to a quieter spot or follow the person.
  • Stay in a public, visible place — If you’re in a parking lot, move toward the main entrance of the supermarket/train station or near other people/cars.

If the Situation Escalates

  • Call for help — Dial 117 (Swiss police emergency) if you feel threatened, followed, or in immediate danger.
You can also say loudly: “I’m calling the police” — this often deters the person.
  • Get to safety first — Go inside a busy store (Migros/Coop), café, or police station if nearby. Ask staff for help if needed.
  • Do not get in a car — Never enter the other person’s vehicle or let them into yours during a classifieds meetup.

After You Leave

  • Block the contact — Immediately block their WhatsApp/phone number and any other channels.
  • Report the incident
  • On markto.ch: Flag the ad (“Melden”) and/or use the footer “Kontaktieren Sie uns” form. Include screenshots of messages, the ad link, and a brief description of what happened.
  • If serious (threats, harassment, attempted robbery): File an online report with your cantonal police (most have easy forms) or call the non-emergency line (0848 117 117).
  • Document everything — Save screenshots of chats, any photos from the meetup, time/location, and notes on what felt wrong. This helps if you need to report later.

Prevention Tips (To Minimize Risk)

  • Always meet in daylight at busy public spots (Migros/Coop parking, train station forecourt, police station lot).
  • Bring a friend for higher-value items or if you feel unsure.
  • Share your live location with a trusted person via WhatsApp during the meetup.
  • Tell someone your exact plan (who, where, when) before going.

Most markto.ch meetups are completely normal — but your safety comes first. If it doesn’t feel right, walking away is always the correct choice. No deal is worth risking your well-being.

Stay safe and trust your gut! 🛡️
