Avoiding Overpayment Scams (Fake Checks, Wrong Amounts)

Overpayment scams are a common tactic used by fraudsters to trick sellers into sending money. In these schemes, a buyer sends a payment that appears higher than the agreed price and then asks you to refund the “extra” amount. Later, the original payment turns out to be fraudulent or reversed, leaving you responsible for the loss.

Understanding how these scams work can help you avoid financial damage.

1. The “Accidental Overpayment” Story
A buyer may claim they mistakenly sent too much money and politely ask you to return the difference. Often, they will create urgency and ask for a quick refund before the payment is fully verified.

2. Fake Checks or Delayed Reversals
In some cases, scammers use fake checks or manipulated payment confirmations. Even if a payment appears in your account initially, it can later be reversed once identified as fraudulent. If you have already refunded the “extra” amount, you may not be able to recover it.

3. Third-Party Pickup Excuses
Fraudsters sometimes say a courier or relative will collect the item, and that you should give the refunded amount to them in cash. This is another variation designed to make you send real money in exchange for fake funds.

4. Pressure to Act Quickly
Scammers often insist that the refund must be sent immediately to correct their “mistake.” This urgency is intended to prevent you from verifying the payment properly.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Never refund money until you are completely certain the original payment is legitimate and fully cleared.
  • Do not rely on screenshots or email confirmations as proof of payment.
  • Avoid sending refunds through alternative methods if the original payment method is suspicious.
  • Keep all communication within the platform.
  • If something seems unusual, pause the transaction.

What to Do If You Suspect an Overpayment Scam

  • Do not send any refund.
  • Stop communicating if the buyer continues to pressure you.
  • Report the suspicious activity using the platform’s reporting tools.

By staying cautious and verifying payments carefully, you can prevent overpayment scams and protect yourself from unnecessary financial losses.
